This beginner course is perfect for students to learn and demonstrate the fundamentals of the shotgun.  We cover  transitioning and other weapons manipulations as it applies to the use of the shotgun.  This course is a practical exercise conducted at a live-fire range.

The student will demonstrate loads, patterns, marksmanship, loading, unloading, movement, shooting platforms, and multiple target transitions to the satisfaction of the instructor. This material covers all fundamental manipulations and current home defensive curriculum. The students will gain knowledge of different loads, patterns, slugs and slug selection and demonstrate techniques to the instructorʼs satisfaction.

Ammunition:  250 bird shot.  50 Slugs.  25 Buck shot (your home defense rounds).  50 rounds for handgun (optional).

  • Firearms safety handling procedures
  • Shotgun operating theory
  • Loading / unloading and transitions
  • Sight picture and patterns as it relates to distance
  • Shooting stances and its relationship to target distance
  • Patterning / chokes
  • Surgical shooting and target “discrimination”
  • Movement with distance
  • Slugs
  • Shooting from cover and barricades
  • Non-lethal loads and alternate loads

Kit- Each student will need to bring:

  • Shotgun.
  • Shotgun speed loaders if you have them.
  • Speed cards if you have them.
  • Serviceable pistol if you have one is optional.
  • Proper holster for handgun (should be snug to your waist) is optional.
  • Eyes and ears.
  • Magazine carrier and 2 spare handgun magazines is optional.

Recommended additional kit:

  • Bring a lunch and enough hydration for the day
  • Sunscreen, wet wipes and other comfort items
  • Pen and paper for notes

We also recommend packing; cleaning kit for weapons maintenance and to wear comfortable clothes. Bring a lunch and enough hydration for the day; or if you prefer, we will break for lunch, and there are BBQ joints, Subway and other choices.   Sunscreen, wet wipes and other comfort items are your friends. To advance to the next class you will be tested on the following mechanical and technical skills. Scoring zones will be shown in class.

STANDARDS Shotgun  I

38 total rounds 90 percent to pass

1. 1 round 00 buck from low ready, breach empty 10 yards (1.5 seconds)
2. 5 round 00 buck from the low ready 10 yards (3 seconds)
3. 2 rounds 00 buck A, 1 round slug low ready 15 yards (2 seconds)
4. 5 rounds 00 buck A T1, 1 round slug B T2, low ready 15 yards (3.5 seconds)
5. 2 rounds 00 buck A, reload tube, 1 round B, low ready 15 yards (4 seconds)
6. 2 rounds 00 buck  A T1, transition 2 rounds A, 1 round B T2 low ready 20 yards (4.5 seconds)
7. 5 rounds 00 buck all combat loaded, standing 20 yards (15 seconds total)
8. 5 rounds slugs, and 5 sounds 00 buck, fire and maneuver 25 yards and 15 yards (15 seconds total)
